Faculty will deepen their knowledge of teaching based upon research-based practices, to include High-Impact Practices, Transparency in Learning and Teaching, Backwards Design, and Taxonomies of Learning.  

Skills

The purpose of this academy is to help faculty refine skills that are essential to their own and their students’ success in the classroom:

• Design (or redesign) of a project, or projects equivalent to 51 hours of student engagement in one of six High-Impact Practices: Undergraduate Research, Work-based Learning (Internships), Capstone), Service Learning, ePortfolios, or Learning Communities
• Apply educational taxonomies to be intentional about student learning outcomes
• Implement the ideals and practices of the Association of American Colleges and Universities initiative for a 21st century education, entitled Liberal Education and America’s Promise
• Articulate the qualities of the assignment or project that qualify it as a HIP

Knowledge

This academy will help faculty become familiar with the following important content, including:  

• Research-based teaching practices 
• Methods for revising assignments for clarity. 
• Strategies to create new or revised High-Impact Practice projects
• Practices and theories underpinning Undergraduate Research, Work-based Learning, Capstone, Service Learning, ePortfolios, and Learning Communities 
• Knowledge of the 8 Key Elements that qualify an assignment or project as a High-Impact Practice 

Participants will:

• Participate in a year-long Community of Practice, which meets via workshops, retreats, and coaching sessions
• Learn to practice transparent assignment design
• Study the theoretical and practical aspects of High-Impact Practices
• Choose one practice (Undergraduate Learning, Work-based Learning, Capstone, Service Learning, ePortfolio, or Learning Communities) for deeper study

• Design a project, or projects, for inclusion and implementation in one course after the Academy’s completion so that the course may be coded as a High-Impact Practice course
• Create a project, or projects, which consist of at least 51 combined hours

Participants will create an assignment (or group of assignments) that have the following characteristics:

• Uses the TILT (Transparency in Learning and Teaching) protocol
• Incorporates research-based teaching practices, specifically Service Learning, Work-based Learning, Undergraduate Research, Capstone, ePortfolio, or Learning Communities
• Applies at least five of the High-Impact Practices Key Elements

Participants will also:

• Give an oral presentation and a copy of the completed assignment(s) developed during the academy to the HIP Academy members
• Incorporate peer feedback in revised assignment and submit via eLearning a copy of the completed assignment

If chosen as one of the academy participants, faculty members will attend a kickoff retreat on the Gainesville campus on Monday, August 28, 2023, from 2-4 p.m. Following this, participants will meet via Zoom to discuss readings and develop expertise in assignment design in their HIP area, for an in-person session on either the Gainesville or Dahlonega campus in November, as well as a final celebration to present projects via Zoom. Faculty members will commit to attending academy meetings and coaching sessions.  See calendar above.

Dr. Rebecca Johnston, Associate Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Leadership, and Dr. Carl Ohrenberg, Assistant Director, will lead the Academy and provide workshops on High-Impact Practices and strategic design principles for course materials. In addition, faculty will participate in a Community of Practice. Each topic area will have a coach and/or mentor who will offer theoretical and practical insights into the practice. Coaches will actively work with participants to generate projects and mentors will advise if and when further guidance may be needed. Coaches and mentors are listed below:

5. ePortfolio (Coach: Michael Rifenburg, Mentor: Lindsay Linsky)
6. Learning Communities (Coach: Rebecca Johnston, Mentor: Nathan Price)

This Academy is a collaborative faculty development program from the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Leadership and the Office of Academic Engagement.

Upon successful completion, faculty members will receive a certificate marking this accomplishment.
